Giovanni + Lusanna Essays - 9, , Term Papers

Giovanni + Lusanna Annonymous I can't accept he did that! I'll settle the score for what occurred. Retribution. Hot blooded or cold and determined. Everybody has had event to look for retribution; to fight back for some off-base, genuine or saw. For a few, reprisal takes a definitive and last structure. Passing. In any case, for a great many people, simply realizing that something was done, regardless of how little, is sufficient to cool the craving to settle the score. There are huge numbers of approaches to review wrongs; nonetheless, in this paper I will simply be discussing three different ways fulfillment might be accomplished. Because of the approach of guest id and guest return, calling somebody at the entire hours of the night is not, at this point a choice. In any case, I realized that in the event that I asked, a neighborhood organization that leases beepers would give me the three digit prefixes for their little pagers. After I got the numbers, I begun to efficiently call one number after another. Now and again I arrived at a latent number, however generally, the number I dialed arrived at a functioning beeper. At the point when I did, I left my casualties telephone number. In any event a hundred people called him, needing to know why he called them. Such a significant number of messages were left on his replying mail that he didn't try to hear it out any more when he returned home from work. Another way I picked up vengeance was progressively ruinous and expensive to the individual in question. The director of the lofts my family and I lived in were interfered with away from the primary street. One day the director chose to set up an entryway over the fundamental passageway street. He utilized a basic chain also, lock to tie down it and gave a key to all the fundamentals. He did this without speaking with anybody, or thinking about the outcomes. After night fell, the door was bolted and the principles would need to escape their vehicles and open the door by hand. In the event that it were coming down, extreme. Cold? As well awful! In the wake of approaching over and over for the entryway to be evacuated, I at long last settled on a game-plan. Late one night I filled the key opening with super paste. The stuff solidified and a key couldn't be placed in. The chief needed to break the lock. In any case, he just purchased another one, which I topped off once more. After five additional locks were demolished, he at long last surrendered on his concept of a bolted door. The last kind of vengeance I'll discuss, was even more a joke that went excessively far. At the point when our little girl was in the emergency clinic, our companions brought her a few presents. Among them was an egg of Silly Putty. Truly innocuous stuff truly. However, our daughter figured out how to get it all over the place. On the attendants call button, her garments, and the floor covering at home. No damage was proposed, however I felt a little compensation back was all together. Standing by calmly for Christmas, I had purchased for their multi year old hellion, the greatest and best Pla-Doh set I could discover. An immense yuck industrial facility. I even purchased additional cups of neon shaded Pla-Doh. After fifteen minutes of, their little girl had figured out how to get that malevolent stuff on the kitchen table, the floor, dividers, and even in her hair! For all that, I felt somewhat liable. Likewise I'm a bit frightful of what structure our companions' retribution may take, for our little girl is going to have another birthday. The requirement for vengeance is by all accounts attached to our essential requirement for conclusion. When wronged by some lump, we want to strike back. At long last, nothing changed the hurt that was caused. Almost no is only from time to time achieved with the exception of conclusion. However, hot damn, didn't it feel better to fix his cart! Our writers will create an original "Characters Behaviors In OConnors Novel" essay for you Create order The grandmother considers the misfit to solid faith, about what makes a good person. The grandmother is considered, the loud mouth Christian of the family. The misfit plays God by eliminating the evils of the grandmotherrs family, while she tries to play along and says the misfit is another one of Gods children. Yes, the grandmother has her beliefs, but the misfit tries to persuade her that, faith requires observation in order to stand. After the grandmother dies in the story, she comes to the realization of salvation. While reading this short story, the grandmother comes upon the true meaning of belief and expands Christianity to the universe. (Teen Ink, 2017) There are many examples of symbolism in A Good Man Is Hard to Find. An example of religious symbolism was presented in the grandmotherrs speech. The grandmother would use religious references when speaking with the misfit and her family members. When the grandmother says pray, pray demonstrates how the grandmother deals with conflict in her lifetime. The grandmother explained to the misfit, if you pray, Jesus would help you. She demonstrates that Christianity would love beyond the misfitrs crimes. (Study Mode, 2011) Since the grandmother emphasizes the misfit to pray, she is criticized for being religious. The misfit and the grandmother, both live by moral codes. Moral codes are sets of beliefs and behaviors to live by what is reasonable. The grandmother has moral codes to try to make people become good. The misfit on the other hand, has consistent moral codes. By being a convicted criminal, he believes crimes are a punishment, but doesnt really matter in the end. The misfit challenges his religious beliefs and tries to figure out a way to follow them. Hers concluded being a religious person is pointless and wants to follow his own religion. In the story when the misfit murders the family, the grandmother plead for her life. She was certain the misfit would respect her moral code. The misfit in the story lacks moral guidance and questions the meaning of life. He carefully tries to find lesson within his actions. The misfit knows he isnt the greatest person in the world, but he does know there are people that are worse than him. The grandmotherrs moral code in the story, ends up falling apart the moment itrs challenged and the misfit views life the way he believes is right. The last moments of the grandmotherrs life, she notices the misfitrs strength and weaknesses. The misfit says that Jesus is the only one that ever raised the dead and sho uldnt have done it. It was also said from the misfit, If He did what He said, then its nothing for you to do but throw away everything and follow Him, and if He didnt, then its nothing for you to do but enjoy the few minutes you got left the best way you canby killing somebody or burning down his house or doing some other meanness to him. No pleasure but meanness,. (OConnor 22) The author of A Good Man Is Hard to Find, places emphasis on people that have no Christian beliefs and finds interest in other things, then religion. He tries to get people reading this story, to experience real Christianity through symbolism throughout the entire story. He uses symbolism to describe how hard it is to find someone thatrs good. This was brought out by the grandmother in the story. People in the story that has the same religion as the grandmother, tend to worship her. She is the woman who is defined as a true Christian. The misfitrs behavior is used to take a toll on the grandmother to boost her faith. Although, seeing how the conversation goes between the grandmother and the misfit, you can tell the misfit has been through many struggles. By reading, you can see how the misfits mind works according to his behavior. In the story, the misfit is also used to represent the young generation when it comes down to being religious and the grandmother represents the old genera tion. What OConnor tries to do, is capture the power of faith in someoners life. A Good Man Is Hard to Find is one of those stories that can be viewed as a life lesson. Human beings will sometimes change as an individual or their opinions on a certain situation that we thought differently about. This conflicts the decisions we begin to make. The grandmother in the story explains her love for Christianity but doesnt pray whenever shers in a crisis. By questioning the power of God, it is obvious she isnt aware of her actions. You can tell in the story, that the grandmother thinks she has the right to judge greatness in others and wishes to tell them how to live their lives. When she was afraid of what would happen to her, she agreed with the misfit and then changes her mind about Jesus rising from the dead. At this point, the grandmother is confused about her beliefs of grace. The misfit was aware of Christianity and Jesus but doesnt believe anything until he sees it. (Study Mode, 2011) The grandmother did at some point have a moment of grace after the misfit questioning what Jesus has done before sacrificing his life. She then says to him Why youre one of my babies, Youre one of my own children!. The grandmother realized they are both the same person despite their sins and weaknesses. Even though grace settles on both of them, they both have the potential to be saved by God. Before the grandmother dies, grace was given to her along with the misfit. In the beginning going back to when the misfit says no pleasure but meanness in life, the misfit declares there is no pleasure in life at all. Killing the grandmother and her whole family, brought him nothing but happiness and joy. OConner made the misfit seem like a good man for connecting with the grandmother when having a conversation and killing her right away. A question that I ask is, what wouldve happened to the grandmother if she met the misfit before going on the trip? Would the misfit ever get caught for killin g the family? These are some questions I asked myself while reading this story. From the beginning of A Good Man Is Hard to Find, no one realized how it reflected to the ending. Towards the end of the story, the misfit says to himself She would have been a good woman if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life. (OConnor 22) Instead of spreading the value of Christianity to others, the grandmother manipulates people for her own benefit. The only moment of grace was mainly towards the end of the story when the misfit holds the gun towards her. It seems the misfit kills the grandmother last, since she gave him a chance to explain his life. The misfit basically used and played the grandmother the entire time. He questioned her about his past, spoked about being a good person and obeying God. Every action the grandmother made, came at a price of her own life. The misfit also recognized a few things about the grandmother towards the end of the story. One is despite her religious beliefs, she conveys herself as a good woman and to the misfit she is not. He also recognized when facing death, the grandmother had the chance to become a good woman. At the end of this short story he realized if the grandmother could have lived her life at gunpoint, she could have gained compassion that she lacked. When I read this story, I didnt really expect for the grandmother to be so manipulating to her family. How can you be so religious and into Christianity, when you do bad things? The grandmother wasnt so different from the misfit after all. Yes, she was trying to get him to change his ways and was telling him to pray while going through problems, but she did not even pray herself. It seems to me the grandmother was never a family person. It also seems like she was trying to stay on the misfitrs good side, but in the end Im sure she didnt know she was going to die herself. Along with her family members. Being a Christian means to stick with that religion, to be good, praise God, be kind and do what is expected of you. I guess the misfit had a plan the entire time of the story. To get the grandmother where he wants her, entertain her, then kill her. He did just that.

In the Apology, Socrates conduct demonstrates his belief that citizens must not be complacent when it comes to political virtue. In order to push citizens out of complacency, Socrates used a method called the â€Å"elecnhus† to prod citizens to discover the true definition of virtues (Jowett, 2009). In doing this, Socrates hoped to promote a rigorous understanding of traditional moral virtues; an understanding of what courage, justice, and wisdom, truly meant (Jowett, 2009). At first†¦show more content†¦Therefore, Socrates held that it was necessary for citizens themselves to comprehend the essence of justice so that they could avoid being slaves to those who managed to hold legal influence at the time (Pla to, 1974, 98, 505c). Such that those who held legal influence may be blind towards the â€Å"good† or essence of justice (Plato, 1974, 98, 505c). Therefore, Socrates second motivation for using the elenchus was in order to promote the valuing of justice, and other traditional values, in hopes that Athenian citizens could identify for themselves the things which adhere to the essence of these values. Accordingly, with these two motives in mind, Socrates engaged with the citizens of Athens, invoking them to question the traditional Greek values. His mission was to give birth in them a desire to understand the true essence of values, and then to be able to recognize it in the physical world. In response to such conduct, Socrates was accused of corrupting the youth, and questioning Greek life, giving rise to the context in The Apology. From the perspective of the Athenian jury, based on his charges, it appeared that Socrates conduct was radical. For the second part of this essay, by using his two motives as a reference, I will now explore the various arguments for why Socrates was not a radical, but instead a conservative. The Whisperings Of The War Essay Example For Students

The Whisperings Of The War Essay A poem is composed of a general theme that sets the mood. The mood of the poem varies form happy to sad, anger to pleasant, or many others. The theme is a general overview of what the poem is stating, but the poem itself has a much deeper meaning and stands for valuable interpretation. Among the words and phrases of a poem, there are certain characteristics and underlying ideas that need to be noticed in order for the poem to be understood. The use of war is a general theme used very often. The following authors and there poems use the theme of war: Rupert Brooke’s, â€Å"The Soldier†; Wilfred Owen’s, â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth†; and William Butler Yeats’, â€Å"An Irish Foresees His Death†. Even though the three poems use the theme of war, they seem to be whispering other underlying ideas which are patriotism, realism, and destiny. Robert Brooke’s poem, â€Å"The Soldier† is a great representation for the patriotism of an English soldier. At the time that the poem war written, World War I was in full force, so that may have affected Brooke’s to write this poem. The poem is written from the aspect of an English soldier. Throughout the poem, implications of patriotism are subjected through the words chosen. â€Å"If I should die, think only this of me/ That there’s some corner of a foreign field/ That is for ever England. There shall be/ In that rich earth a richer dust concealed† (320). Brooke’s portrays this soldier to be willing to die for his country, just so he will be able to add to England’s victory. The soldier feels that his life will be held in honor and that his bones are much more valuable than some piece of land. Also, the soldier thinks that when he dies, he will be leaving a little piece of England there on the battlefield, making it a better place. Brooke’s describes patriotism very well and the mindset of a soldier willing to protect his homeland. In stories told, it seems that the thought going through most soldiers head’s is death and when they are going to die. In Wilfred Owen’s poem, â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth†, the theme of realism is described throughout the poem. Like Brookes, Owen wrote this poem during the era of World War I. The poem is written from the perspective of a soldier that tells of the realism of war and the troubles it causes. The soldier describes a scene of absolute chaos, the kind of scene found in a journal, not a letter home. â€Å"What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?/ Only the monstrous anger of the guns./ Only the stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle/ Can patter out their hasty orisons./ No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells† (321). The soldier explains the death that is happening in the war and the bodies that are surrounding him. He app roaches the issue of the dying and can only come to the conclusion that if they keep fighting it will stop. The soldier also notices the lack of mourning and acknowledgement for the dead. This shows the realism of war because even though people are dying, the fighting must continue in order to win. In war there is no time to mourn the death of soldiers until after the fighting is over, and Owen reveals this immensely. Accepting your own death is very hard to do, but most people know that they are going to die. Knowing that you are going to die soon is almost impossible to accept. In William Butler Yeats’ poem, â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death†, destiny plays a major role in war. Also like Brookes and Owens, Yeats wrote this at the time of World War I. The poem is written from the point of view of an Irish pilot who accepts the fact that it is his destiny to die in battle. The soldier describes what he will think will happen. â€Å"I know that I shall meet my f ate/ Somewhere among the clouds above;/ . . . The years to come seemed waste of breadth,/ A waste of breadth the years behind/ In balance with this life, this death.† (322). The soldier knows that once he gets into the plane there is no turning back. He knows he will die, and nothing can stop him. He looks back on his life and the memories, and then forward to his future and neither are worth living for, just to die for country, knowing death is coming quick. Yeats describes destiny rightly in his poem. .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f , .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .postImageUrl , .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f , .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f:hover , .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f:visited , .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f:active { border:0!important; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f:active , .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u614fb1b52c00e9aecd922631ee3ec46f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: One Hell of a System EssayThe aspects of war have many different affects on poets as seen in the previous writing. War is a very inspirational subject and leads poets to write like they have never written before. It enables them to express themselves using words that flow in what seems like a natural order. The theme that a poet decides to use is what gives the poem substance and life, but it is what the author does not blatantly say that gives the poem meaning. A poet lets others understand what people really imagine about the world and different views from different people. ( World Wide Web. loc. gov ) -The Dred Scott determination: The Dred Scott determination was a supreme tribunal determination that was issued on March 6. 1857 saying that slaves could non action and were non to be considered citizens of the United States. With the determination. the Missouri Compromise was considered unconstitutional and that Congress shouldn’t have the authorization to censor bondage in their part. The 13th and 14th amendments so came to be with this determination. ( World Wide Web. loc. gov ) -Freeport Doctrine- This philosophy was written by Stephen Douglas and stated that bondage could be excluded by districts of the United States. this was a was to derive retaliation of the Dred Scott determination. ( World Wide Web. encyclopaedia. com ) -Harper’s Ferry- In October 1859 John Brown and 18 others raided the federal armory in Haperâ €™s Ferry. Virginia. His concluding behind this was he thought that the slaves would come to assist his cause and disobey their Masterss. but no slaves accompanied him. Brown was found guilty of lese majesty and was hanged publically. ( World Wide Web. mce. k12tn. net/civilwar ) 3. To what extent can the Civil War be accounted for as a battle between two counter economic systems? Include political branchings. representation equity. economic and educational issues – item and support of your thoughts is really of import here. The North and the South were in a changeless stuggle for both power and representation in Congress. The two sides had wholly different position points and handled concern really otherwise. The North was a free province and the South was a slave province. Each province had representatives that acted as the interpreter for the province. The North didnt want the South to hold more representation and the South felt the same about the North. So whenever the Union added a province the Confederacy wanted to add a slave province. This went back and Forth until the Civil War began. The Union earned their income with industry and doing many necessities. where the South relied to a great extent on baccy. cotton. and the most debatable bondage. The South besides wanted 3/5 of every slave to number as a adult male and be used to stand for the province in Congressional affairs. The Union would non hold with this what so of all time and wholly close this thought down. The South had a lower population. had a little railway system. did non bring forth much steel or Fe. had less wealth. less valuable exports. less mills. but had the bulk of all farming area in the United States. The instruction difference was a major difference excessively. The Northerners were more educated and had a much more to offer educationally. In the South they entirely relied on the farm and what type of merchandise it was bring forthing. Even though the South did non hold everything the North did. they were content and were non in the temper for any alteration at all. ( civilwar. org ) 4. Distinguish between the Lincoln Reconstruction Plan. the Johnson Reconstruction Plan. and the Congressional Reconstruction Plan. which do you believe should hold been applied? Explain to the full. The Lincoln Reconstruction Plan was to be every bit fleet as possible and consisted of three chief points a general forgiveness would be given to everyone in the South who would take an curse of trueness to the Union and the United States as a whole and to obey all bondage Torahs. He besides stated that each high ranking Confederate functionary would be dismissed from the procedure. Finally with one ten percent of a popular ballot of those who voted in 1860. the province would be able to set forth their ain authorities and selected their ain functionaries. ( www. u-s-history. com ) The Johnson Reconstruction Plan was the program issued after Lincoln’s blackwash and would include: all forgivenesss would be given if a trueness curse was recited. Then there would be no forgivenesss g iven to any high ranking Confederate functionaries or any citizen owning a belongings valued at $ 20. 000. After that each province must wholly get rid of bondage before being readmitted and was required to reexamine their withdrawing authorization before being readmitted. ( www. u-s-history. com ) The Congressional Reconstruction Plan or the Extremist Reconstruction Plan was a Congress based program that placed former Confederate provinces under military power and divided the provinces into five territories. A separate Union general was placed in each territory and ran each. The Army would move as the authorities until a new authorities was put in topographic point. The military made the Confederated followed mandated orders and was in charge of voting for grownup males including African Americans. After that Congress declared their right to hold ultimate power over the provinces and was highlighted in the Texas v. White instance of 1869. All new Confederate authoritiess were non allowed to set former high ranking functionaries into power. Finally all new provinces were to sign the 14th amendment. ( World Wide Web. tdl. org ) I think the Congressional Reconstruction Plan best suited the United States. Lincoln’s was merely to loosen up. The state about fell apart so the lone thing to make was something extremist. 5. Was Lincoln’s issue of the Emancipation Proclamation a contradiction of his earlier profession that the Civil War was being waged non for the devastation of bondage but for the saving of the Union? Explain to the full as you can. Abraham Lincoln has a great repute and is known to be the 1 who set the slaves free. Although he played a major function on the abolition of bondage. his first purposes were non ever swayed toward that determination. Before the Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln said to a Cincinnati crowd in 1859 â€Å"I now assure you. that I neither†¦ had. nor have had. any intent in any manner of interfering with the instirution†¦Ã¢â‚¬ or another illustration to an editor at the New York Times â€Å"My paramount object in this battle is to salvage the Union. and is non either to salvage or destruct bondage. † These statements from Lincoln show clearly that he had other thoughts about what should and would be done with bondage. Something between 1859 and 1863 wholly changed his head and came to a realisation that a cheeky determination should be made. So in 1863 the Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclaimation. He had been formulatating his program and cognize befre any other American what was in shop. Lincoln did non desire to interfer with the slave trade. but realized that the Union could and would non last unless bondage was wholly abolished. Many critize Lincoln and say no slaves were even emancipated on the twenty-four hours of its declaration and merely certain slaves that were in rebellious provinces were consider to be free. The Emancipation Proclamation was non a contadiction to any ealier statements. it was a program that merely Lincoln knew approximately. He knew the biggest job was bondage and alteration needed to be made. ( wuod. lib. umich. edu )

Harriet Tubman Fight for Freedom free essay sample

A strong and powerful lady said these wise words: â€Å"There was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other; for no man should take me alive; I should fight for my liberty as long as my strength lasted, and when the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me†. The brave women who said these words were Harriet Tubman and she was one of the leaders of the Underground Railroad that helped slaves reach freedom. Although not an actual railroad of steel rails, locomotives and steam engines, the Underground Railroad was real nevertheless† (encyclopedia The Civil War and African Americans 329) The term â€Å"Underground Railroad† referred to the network of safe houses, transportation and the many very kind hearted people who risked their own lives to help the slaves escape from the Southern States to freedom. We will write a custom essay sample on Harriet Tubman Fight for Freedom or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Many different kinds of transportation were actually used. Sometimes the slaves would travel by foot or they could be hidden on boats, or hide in wagons or carts carrying vegetables or other goods The runaway slaves became known as â€Å"passengers†, and the route traveled was the â€Å"line† while people who helped out along the way were called the â€Å"agents†. Leaders like Harriet Tubman who would travel with the slaves that were escaping, were called â€Å"conductors†. Araminta Ross later known as Harriet Tubman was born a slave. Since her master needed money, he would rent her out to work for different masters doing housekeeping and childcare but Harriet was not good at this type of work and so she was often beaten and sent back to her original master. She eventually was made to work as a slave in the fields with her father. One day, while Harriet was working, a slave who was trying to escape ran past her. The slave’s master was running after him â€Å"Araminta (Harriet Tubman) was told to hold the slave that had tried to escape while the owner whipped him. She refused and tried to help the slave escape instead† (Journey to Freedom 13) She did this by getting in the way of the master who was running after the slave. This is how Harriet Tubman even as a child, helped a slave reach freedom and it was a big part of what inspired her to gain her own freedom and want to help other slaves escape. Even though Harriet Tubman was never taught to read or write she was very strong willed, religious and smart and she believed that people had the right to be free and did not think it was right to beat people just because they did not have white skin. Harriet was determined to be free and help others, â€Å"she would become a beacon of hope to other slaves, â€Å"Moses† helping to set her people free†. (Harriet Tubman Moses of the Underground Railroad 23) Araminta married a white man named Richard Tubman when she was in her twenties. She still worked as a slave for her master but at night she was allowed to stay with her husband. She tried to talk to her husband about escaping but he just got mad and said that he would turn her in, so without Harriet telling him, she and three of her brothers decided to escape. Her brothers became scared and turned back but Harriet made it to Philadelphia. When Harriet Tubman arrived in Philadelphia she later remembered feeling that â€Å"I had crossed the line of which I had so long been dreaming. I was free. She said she felt as if she were in heaven. † (Harriet Tubman Moses of the Underground Railroad 35) She got a job in Philadelphia and saved as much money as she could so that she could help other slaves to escape. Harriet Tubman became active with the â€Å"Philadelphia Vigilance Committee†. This was a group that provided one of the stations of the Underground Railroad that helped runaway slaves. She was very anxious to become involved. Her first trip to rescue slaves was a trip to bring her sister and family to freedom. Harriet was an excellent planner and thought out every detail. She arranged for her brother-in-law to pose as an agent for a master and pretend that his master wanted to see the slaves before purchasing. The plan worked and Harriett’s sister, husband and family were able to calmly walk away without anyone suspecting that they were going to escape. Harriet had many helpers or â€Å"agents† helping her. She used signals to let others know when it was safe to go from one place to another. Harriet’s sister and her family were able to crawl on a wagon that was carrying vegetables and make it all the way to Baltimore. Harriet met them in Baltimore and got them safely to Philadelphia by planning the entire route and hiring the necessary transportation and agents to help. Harriett Tubman was herself a fugitive and could have been caught anytime but he was brave and believed that she â€Å"heard the voice of god† and that He was telling her what to do to help the slaves escape. On another of her trips south to help free slaves, she sent a message to her husband asking him to join her in the North but she found out that he had married someone else. This made Harriett even more determined. She returned to the South nineteen times. The slaves would know who she was because of the song she would sing. â€Å"Dark and thorny is the pathway, Where the pilgrim makes his ways; But beyond this vale of sorrow, Lie the fields of endless days. (The Underground Railroad in American History 65) Each time she came back she would bring a group of 4 to 5 slaves with her. She was personally responsible for bringing over 70 slaves to freedom, and is given credit for helping many more. It was never an easy trip. Even though there were, at times, safe places to stay along the way, most of the journey was done by foot and at night. Sometimes when they were traveling at night it would be so dark that the only way they could tell which direction they were going was to try to feel the moss on the trees since the moss grew thicker on the North side. She would always leave on a Saturday night because on Sunday’s the slaves did not have to work and they would not be missed until Monday. Many times the slaves that came with her would become weak and scared and want to return, but she would not allow this because if one of them talked, then everyone who was set to help them now or in the future would be at risk. â€Å"The whole network of safe houses, agents and white and black allies who made the Railroad possible would be put in danger†. Harriet Tubman Moses of the Underground Railroad 59) At one point, one of the slaves traveling with her became scared, Harriet always traveled with a gun and she took out her gun and said â€Å"do you think I would let so many die just for one coward man? † Harriett Tubman Moses of the Underground Railroad 59) She became very well known and even had a reward of $40,000 for her capture. In 1850 it became even more dangerous for slaves escaping to the North because of the Compromise of 1850 â€Å"It required citizens to assist in the recovery of fugitive slaves†. There were posters that gave the names of slaves and stated â€Å"You’ve crossed the treacherous border states and, sor far, eluded slave catchers. But you can feel their breath, and as you cross into New England, you’ve heard tell of a law giving anyone with a badge not just the power but the obligation to arrest you. † (The Boston Globe, Sepember 26, 2010) Because of this, Canada was becoming the safest place for escaping slaves. Canada was governed by the British who had passed the â€Å"Abolition of Slavery Act† in 1834. In Canada â€Å"Emancipation was not only a word in the dictionary but an action to liberate one’s destiny. Harriet Tubman now helped slaves escape all the way to Canada because even slaves that had escaped to states in the North were not safe and could be sent back. During one of her journeys to Canada she was helping a group of slaves going from Philadelphia to Canada, the slaves were sure they were going to be caught and sent back but Harriett helped them take a train over a bridge that went to Canada and when they arrived in Canada â€Å"Tubman ran to one of the doubting slaves and said â€Å"You shook the lion’s paw, Joe. You’re free† Harriet not only had to overcome the slave states in the South, but the efforts of the Southern States to get their slaves back. The Dred Scott case before the Supreme Court in 1857 made her efforts to keep slaves free in the North more difficult. It ruled that Black’s had no rights and could be kept as slaves. â€Å"Abraham Lincoln opposed this decision and in his campaign speeches for the presidency he said the Supreme Court should not have denied equal rights to African Americans†. (Journey to Freedom 25) It was not until the end of the Civil war that the Blacks were freed. During the civil War Harriet aided the Union Army she helped set up field hospitals and formed a group of African American Scouts on a raid that freed 700 slaves. Using her skills from the Underground Railroad, she let them through the woods behind enemy lines (Journey to Freedom 26) after the war she continued helping the freed slaves to survive by buying food and get educated by fundraising for a school. Harriett Tubman truly was the â€Å"Moses† for her people helping lead them out of slavery. Harriett Tubman lived a long life dying in 1913 at the age of 93.

Free Essays on Goat Gland Science

GOAT-GLAND SCIENCE The amazing events that I’m writing about in this article would never have occurred if John R. Brinkley hadn’t received a mail order medical degree in 1917 and obtained a job as the company doctor at the Swift Meatpacking Company in Kansas. While working at the meat packing plant, Brinkley was intrigued that goats destined for the slaughterhouse vigorously mated. A few years later, Brinkley set up a private practice in the small hamlet of Milford, Kansas. One day a farmer came in to Brinkley’s office complaining of a sagging libido. Recalling the frantic antics of the goats at the slaughterhouse, Dr. Brinkley suggested to the farmer that what he needed was a goat gland transplant. It should be noted that previously Brinkley had been a snake oil salesman selling injections of colored distilled water at $25.00 a shot purported to increase vitality. Being the unethical person he was and with a wobbly knowledge of medicine, Brinkley implanted a bit of goat gonad into the farmer’s testicle. Shortly thereafter, the farmer’s wife became pregnant followed by the birth a baby boy whom the couple appropriately named â€Å"Billy†. Word spread of the success of the goat-gland transplant and the doctor soon had a flood of patients from around the world. Brinkley charged $750.00 per transplant, a large sum of money during the depression. In all he performed over 16,000 goat-gland transplants making him a wealthy man. Very few people who had the operation complained that it didn’t work because Brinkley explained that the operation only worked on intelligent people. There were a few problems. For example, when Brinkley switched from Toggenbergs to Angoras a patient sued. The patient didn’t sue because the operation didn’t work but because afterward he â€Å"smelled so bad.† Brinkley switched back to Toggenbergs. As many as 40 goats a day were shipped to the clinic. Organisational Change Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words - 11

Organisational Change Management - Essay Example In this regard, the council, through a consultant has been advised to use Appreciative Inquiry 5D to overcome the problem facing the organization and to allow them offer better services to the council. The use of AI 5D involves identifying the strengths rather than weaknesses to bring change in the organization, this paper then discusses the use of AI 5D in bring the necessary change in the council (Englund, Graham, and Paul 2006, p.35). Definition The main concern of the change process in the council is necessitated by the higher levels of absenteeism by the employees who abscond their duties most of the time, they do not show up to take care of their duties and this has led to the emergence of some of the problems associated with absenteeism. The department that was worst hit in this case was that of the elderly care in the council, the care managers then became concerned about the situation as it aggravated the condition of elderly in the council that needed the support of the emp loyees. With the absenteeism rate spiralling, there are a number of issues that became apparent for action to be taken so that change could be brought. One of the salient problems that became out of control was the decline in the quality of the services that was being offered by the council, due to the widespread absenteeism, the quality of the services that was being provided by the council experienced significant drop owing to the fact that there were few employees who showed up. This made it possible for the work to be strenuous to the few individuals who turned up and the demands of the department could not be fully achieved hence decline in the quality of the services (Tennant 2012, p.47). The absenteeism factor also created another problem in the council’s department where the employees who turned up for their duties were subjected to more duties than prescribed so that they could cover for the duties that were to be done by the other workers who decided to be absent. B ecause of these, it became strenuous and stressful to the few workers who maintained reporting for their duties, they worked more than necessary and it was envisaged that if the trend continues, there would be possibility of breakdown and burnout that will definitely impair the performance of the employees who showed up for their duties every day. This consequence too made it prudent for the organization to find a solution to the challenge that was facing the organization as it was bedevilling the performance in more than one way (Reed 2007, p.53). The colleagues that were absent for work had to be covered for by those who turned up, this explains why there was more duties for those who showed up resulting into stressful work (Kluwer 2008, p.58). Lastly, absenteeism also had serious economic consequences for the council, ordinarily employees should be paid for the services that they offer to the organization that employs them, if these services are not offered, then there should be no payments given to the employees. If this happens, there will be obvious losses incurred by the organization, in this respect, the employees that had been out of their duties in the organization were causing serious economic pinch to the organizati
